MEMBERSHIP
Like most Golf Clubs we are always looking for new Members to replace those who move away or just get too old to play. Our average age is higher than most clubs, which has its effect on our membership.
We will therefore be advertising again this year from March onwards and our new Membership Director Richard Gremo is currently considering our advertising campaign with our President Michael Behr. If anyone has any ideas please contact either of them – they will be pleased to hear from you.
We will also be offering a £50 Incentive to existing Members who introduce new Full Playing Members to the Club. Full details will be available soon – the incentive will be by way of a discount from the next year’s subscription. There will be no limit to the number of incentives, which can be earned in any year. So introduce 10 Members for a free year!

Junior Section Captain Jack Tucker, Vice Captain Marika Rapley
September gave us better weather on Monday nights than the last few in August and the junior turnout reflected this. Their lessons with Zara are going very well and it is hoped that we can come to some arrangement throughout the winter on Sunday afternoons once a month. Finals day was a lovely afternoon and it was a privilege to referee the Richard Gremo K.O. Cup. An excellent game which eventually turned out a win, for the second year running, for our Captain Jack, with James Green giving him a very close game.
September 13th was the date for the annual Ford Five Club, another very close fight and after countback the result was a win for our Vice Captain Marijke, again with James runner up. However, also included in the afternoons presentation was the Most Improved Player Trophy which, inevitably, went to James Green.
A 9 hole greensomes stableford was arranged for the juniors over 28 or 36 handicap and was ably won by Millie and Louise Tucker.
Next competition will be the monthly medal on October 18th at 1pm.
Mel
Ladies Section Captain Linda Bawden, Vice Captain Beryl Wingrove
Secretary Jean Hudson

An Autumnal September started with the Autumn Greensomes competition-drawn partners, one high and one low handicap. Janet Arnold and Louise Tucker were winners with 39 points. They had an eventful round as Janet’s electric trolley seemed to have a life of it’s own and had to be rescued twice-careering off un-manned down the first fairway and wheel-spinning into the bunker by the third green. Vilma Parrett and Sue Pout were second with 37 points.
Finals weekend was a lovely weekend. The weather was good and the golf was excellent. Well done to Sheila Wyles for organising-no easy feat when a number of players were in more than one final. Well done to all the referees, caddies and spectators who helped make it such a successful event. In the ladies section the winners were Holly Butler who beat Pat Bensted in the Seasalter Ladies Singles final. Both played well below their handicaps so credit to both. Margaret Barker and Sheila Wyles beat Pat and Shirley Dalton in the Jubilee Rosebowl, that match going to the 17th. In the mixed finals, Clive and Jackie Witten beat Mick and Sheila Wyles in the Klein Cup-also on the 17th. And Margaret Barker and Mick Wyles beat Louise Tucker and Andy Selwood on the 19th (the only match to go into extra holes) for the Stanley Cup.
Pat Bensted went one better at the Autumn meeting to win the morning medal with a net 67. Joan Sykes was second on 69 and Holly Butler third on 70. Janet Henley had the best front nine and Sheila Wyles the best back nine. In the afternoon the 9 hole joint stableford was won by Molly Broadbent and Jackie Witten. Inge Parry and Maz Garlinge were second.
Pat’s good score in the morning also helped her to victory in the Aggregate Cup, for best scores in the Spring and Autumn meetings.
The ladies returned to the course after a short break for essential course maintenance to play a stableford competition. Putting was made even more difficult than normal by the heavily-dressed and bumpy greens. This didn’t affect Margaret Barker who putted like a demon on her way to a winning 35 points. Inge Parry and Helen Gurney were second and third respectively with 34 points each.
The Daily Mail Foursomes is always an enjoyable competition but a notoriously difficult format. Penny Perkins and Holly Butler were convincing winners with 38 points, Betty Washby and Joyce Jaynes were second on countback with 35 points. We will now wait to hear if Penny and Holly go through to the knock-out stage of the competition.

Men’s Section Captain Andy Sargeant, Vice Captain Ted Henderson
Golf Report for Sundays – September 2014
September’s medal provided the last opportunity to gain committee cup points and interestingly all those in contention failed to improve their standing. Jon Whorlow and John Wegner both needed to be placed on order to stand a chance of stealing the trophy, but neither could manage to improve their points total, leaving Mark Payne this year’s Committee Cup winner, four points clear of his nearest challengers.
The September medal was won by David Bowman who showed his true potential at last with a net 61 score. David started well with two pars and despite a triple bogie on hole three played well enough over the remaining holes to finish one shot clear of Jon Perkins. Jon got off to a good start with a birdie on the first and finished with a classy 74 gross. Vice Captain Ted Henderson enjoyed a return to form and his net 63 was good enough to take third place; but for four dropped shots on the fourth Ted’s score would have been good enough for an outright win.
Glen Snook, Howard Gordon, David Bowman and Peter Guilfoyle ended easy winners of the September team Stableford competition after they amassed 127 points for their best three scores on each hole. Surprisingly the supposedly easy par three 15th (where only four points were scored) was the only hole that caused the team problems. Whilst the team scored ten points at the difficult tenth. Rob Davis, Jon Perkins, Ian Horton and Tony Taunton finished runners up with a very respectable 123 point team total.

Old Salts Section Captain George Bawden, Vice Ian Wingrove
The Salts went to beautiful Faversham in glorious weather to contest the Bill Dance Silver Salver and after a manful struggle lost out to the home side 9 ½ – 6 ½. Fav retained the salver and afterwards treated everyone to a grand sit-down and a few wines. That’s golf.
In the Qualifying Bawden’s Bottle challenge early in the month Roy Percival showed the way home with a fine 40 points, followed by our old fox Les Cox, back to form again, with 38. John Wegner beat Barry Broadbent now to be seen more often out with the Salts on countback. John carded 37 points. In the Vice-Captain’s challenge Ian Wingrove and John Wegner just shaded the Rod Whitehead/Des Barker pairing, ending the match one up. It is especially nice to see Rod back on the fairways after such a long absence, and playing so well after virtually a year away nursing Ros.
The mixed Presidents team swung into action at Chestfield to take on the Mitrebeens and lost closely. It was the 13th but all was not lost. Captain George said the day was ‘a typical English occasion and a game played in great spirit.’
At Sheerness the Salts gathered to take on the islanders and wrestled a couple of games from them, but went down five games to two as they failed to switch on to the greens. Sadly, this was the last friendly away game for Captain George and he received a standing ovation both from his team and the hospitable and friendly hosts at Power Station Road.
Collingwood Road hosted the mixed pairs from Westgate again in fine weather and earned a great draw 4 ½ – 4 ½. The meal afterwards was another triumph for Tony and his team and was much applauded.
Talking of bellies again …………..An excellent lunch was served by Tony after the customary Dennis Annis Past Captains Trophy competition.
This was won by Martyn Dines with a magnificent Stableford score of 42 points. There were eight players and the lunch was attended by 12 Past Captains and our present old Salts captain, Swinging George Bawden.
The line-up of the great and not so good these days comprised of Bruce Crocker, Des Barker, Ted Backhouse, Tony Bensted, Martyn Dines, Tony Taplin, Terry Ray, George Thompson, Les Drinkwater, Mike Tiley, Ray Clarke, Lionel Pout and of course the present Captain.
Mike Tiley, grandfather of Tour golfer Steven Tiley who a couple of years ago led the Open for two rounds, was brought from his nursing home by his carer nurse and enjoyed his lunch.
Lionel Pout, a sprightly 97, who did not start playing golf until he was 74, also enjoyed his lunch.
This is an enjoyable event in the Old Salts calendar where old memories and golfing deeds are mulled over, and long may it continue.
As for the usual Thursday jollies, the growing in popularity Pairs competition held as the month closed, saw Trevor Croxton and Brian Ridley carry off a couple of American Golf vouchers for their efforts in winning with a combined points tally of 72. Closely following was the Taunton/Silk duo just one point away on 71. Dave Morgan and Gwyn Oakley edged into third place on countback, beating a posse of players on 68.
Earlier, a grand Thursday morning saw in-form Tony Taunton (is he ever out of form?) grab the spoils with a fine 43 points, Showing a clean pair of heels to Swinging George Bawden who manfully carded an equally rewarding 41 points. Back from holiday David Dale carded a tally of 40.
The middle of the month was, as usual at this time of year, marred a little by necessary course maintenance, but life went on as we wrestled with the greens. We must however pay tribute to Steve and Seth for their efforts in bringing the course up to standard for the coming year. Well done again.
As we gear up to print, the Old Salts AGM is looming. On the 9th we gather, after a nine-hole game, to vote on things and people, but we still do not have a taker for the post of Salts Secretary. If you need a job that is rewarding and you feel you can withstand the military might of new Captain Ian Wingrove.Your the man!

Midweekers Section Captain Ray Thomas, Vice Captain Bob Ireland
Secretary Peter Fox
Wednesday 10th September-The Cyril Wren September Cup Medal
Well what can I say we played against Albert and Roy Lee in the Captain’s Challenge and they stuffed us 4 and 3. The main competition was won by Mike Love with a fine net 63, second on countback was Holly Butler and third also on 64 Mark Blackmore. Birdie prizes were won on the 6/15th by Anthony Wright and Holly, Mark Blackmore was successful on the 4th and I won a bottle of booze for a birdie on the 8th!
Sweep winners were Colin Holton and Eynon Price. Appearance awards were given to James Marsh, Stan Dobson and Roy Lee for 50 shows and Albert Adams got one for 200 well done him.
Leeds Castle Frolic Wednesday 17th September
A mixed team of 16 visited the lovely Leeds Castle GC and enjoyed a great day some good golf was played in the Texas Scramble Format, The winning team was Ian and Beryl Wingrove with Dave Hodgson and Colin Holton. We all retired to The Park Gate Inn for a lovely lunch and drinks, a great day shame more people didn’t make it. Make sure you get your diary date set for next year; it really is a good day out!
Friday 26th September The Hamish Burnett Tandoori Cup Stableford
Captain’s Challenge, there we were me and Rodney who stood in for Ray Thomas (get well soon Ray), lulling Tony Love and Tommy Burns into a false sense of security being only 5 down with 6 to play when Tommy forgot himself and got a Birdie 2 on the 13th game over!
The cup was won by John Fullagar with a fine 40 points winning on countback from Bob Daniels, third was Ian Horton with 39. Alan Callaghan and Tommy Burns won birdie prizes. John Fullagar won the bottle on the 17th with a birdie.
The Summer Eclectic competition results were Joint First John Fullagar and Mark Blackmore with a net 55 and the runner up was Tommy Burns with 55.5

Super Seventies Organiser and Captain Alec Parrett
Our hopes of some badly needed away points when we visited North Foreland as the month began were dashed as we were whitewashed by a very strong team bent on revenge. We had surprised them a few weeks earlier with a four-one win at Collingwood Road and it obviously hurt them a bit as they chased Broome Park for top honours this year.
The after-match drink was, thankfully, boosted by some extra tots that came from the celebration of a hole in one by one of the home team, playing off eight. Our nearest sniff of a win came from a three and two loss from the David Dale/Henry Kernighan pairing. In truth we couldn’t get near Foreland as our handicaps couldn’t stand up to, in some cases, giving 21 handicappers (playing to 16), five shots on their home course, especially as more than one home player carded consecutive pars and putted our lights out on their tricky greens. Sour grapes? No. Just stating facts.
The match against Etchinghill as both the month and the 2014 League came to an end, was an important one for us. We had not fared well on those mysterious greens nestling in the beautiful Elham Valley when we visited them at the end of July and we needed the points to stay well away from the bottom of League C. In the event we never lost a game as we put our near rivals firmly in their place with three wins and two halves, one of our pairs just being caught on the last.
A look at the final League table posted in the changing room will show that we finished just two points from our visitors with a well played 70, well ahead of wooden-spooners Chestfield who tallied 51. Broome Park rubbed it in there last week when they visited our neighbours to take the points they needed for yet another Table win, making not three as we first reported but four in succession. These vital points for them earned them a six point gap at the top over Canterbury. Foreland were six points further adrift .
Well done everyone who played this year. Alec would like to thank and applaud those who did their bit. Onwards and hopefully upwards in 2015.
