Whitstable Tidings August 2018

Aloha from the President

Firstly I trust the word ‘enjoying’ the weather in July was rather the wrong word, unless you found shade, it could be oppressive. Me personally, I like the hot weather as I suffer in the winter with SAD!

July meant two of the biggest days in the calendar for me and after all the fabulous weather mentioned in the previous paragraph, when it came to the men’s President’s day, guess what……. it rained! So I would like to thank all those members who entered and played in the rain, which started around 09.30 and continued to the end. I enjoyed the day immensely with the competitive play a joy to witness and this was reflected in the tight margins between the final scores.

The President’s prize was won by Ronnie Rumball & Barry Broadbent, so very well-done to them for their consistent play throughout the day. Gary Morgan & Colin Satchell were second with third place going to John Stokes & Brian Wild, again well done.

Tuesday 8th August was the Ladies President’s day and what a contrast to the conditions for the men’s prize….. 30 degrees and feeling like an oven! The Ladies again valiantly played on, with two only playing 9 because of the heat and one retiring. I think the day was a brilliant success and a big thank to my wife Sue who had a perfect idea of making strawberries dipped in chocolate along with other refreshments halfway round. These were very well received by all including me, as I had to finish off the last two! Both Sue and I were delighted that Sue Maflin, who was lady Captain in 1992, won the first prize after several years of taking part. Well done to you Sue! Second prize as runner up went to Margaret Barker, with 3rd going to Penny Perkins, so a well done from us both. Thank you to all who supported me by playing in both of these events, it is appreciated at such a busy time of the year.

Well that’s all from me this month, but don’t forget all the things coming up. Callum has his Junior Captains day on the 18th August, Treasure Hunt on the 17th August organised by the social committee and Howard’s Charity day on the 1st of September, so get your names down and make them a success.

Bye for now John
