Dave Gould
It was with great sadness that we heard the news of Dave Gould’s death on Friday 14th September
We all have our memories of Dave and here are a few from his family and friends from Herne Bay GC.
Dave Gould was originally from Battersea in London. At the age of 5 he had a fall and damaged his knee, unfortunately, the kneecap became diseased and was removed. From that day on Dave walked with a stiff leg, but this did not stop him from joining a cycling club in his teens and cycled hundreds of miles with the club using a fixed wheel. Dave was still cycling in his late 60s.
Dave arrived in Herne Bay in 1971 and for many years enjoyed playing golf at Herne Bay Golf Club. In 1989 he became club captain for the first time taking on the roll again many years later in 2001. During the period between his captaincies he also joined the Odds & Ends senior section and was asked to captain their section, which he was proud to do.
Dave Gould also ran the Junior section of HBGC for many years and could not do enough for the youngsters who treated him with great respect. Another thankless task that Dave took on was Men’s Guest Day organizer, a roll that he kept for many years.
Dave loved to go away on golfing breaks and over the years visited Norfolk, Essex, Hampshire, Cornwall and many more places in England. He also had golfing holidays abroad, visiting France, Spain, Portugal and Tenerife. In the last ten years Dave has also travelled three times to Florida. The first time he flew to Florida Dave took his shoes off during the 9 hour flight and when we landed his feet had swollen so much he could not get them back on, he had to get off the plane and walk through Orlando Airport in his socks. We never let him forget it. The last time we were all there we let Dave tee off the Ladies tees because the courses were so long, but as soon as he hit the first ball we all shouted CHEAT to which Dave fell about laughing. He had a great time and played 13 rounds of golf on that holiday.
Dave was a polite man and never rude to anyone, he was funny, witty and a joy to be with. He will be missed by everyone that knew him.

Future Events
Fun and frolics at Leeds Castle!
Yes it’s that time of year again, the annual away day at Leeds Castle Golf Club is set for a slightly later time than usual due to the number of events this year at the club.
The proposed new date is Wednesday 17th October 2012, meeting at Leeds Castle at 0800 for coffee and chat. The format is 18 holes Stableford, full handicap allowance, Ladies and Gentlemen in mixed Fourballs with individual prizes for Ladies and Gents, a team prize for the best eclectic score and some hidden prizes.
Make sure you book early to avoid disappointment!
Lunch will be taken in The Parkgate Inn and a list of food available will be posted in the clubhouse prior to the event.
Booze, Blues and Clues
Friday 9th November
The Back Street Bloozers will entertain you to an evening of blues music, the band features our own Ted Backhouse beating the skins, while you puzzle out the answers to the captains quiz!
Teams of eight will be provided with a delicious platter of nibbles produced by the masterly hands of Tony Love.
The price for this unmissable evening is £10.00 per head.
The list will be put on the noticeboard in the clubhouse soon, do not miss this event, get your teams together, prizes for the winning team!
Gourmet Evening Friday November 2nd.
This event is open to all club members and their guests.
The menu is as follows:-
Starters-Coquille’s St. Jaques, deep fried Brie served with red onion marmalade, smoked fish chowder.
Mains-Sirloin steak served with French mustard sauce, slow roast duck legs served with orange brandy sauce, baked cod with Italian crust.

On Thursday 6th. September Whitstable & Seasalter Old Salts played a qualifying medal competition.
Conditions could only be described as ideal with a cloudless sky and no wind. This attracted a large field and the general standard of golf did not disappoint.
At the end of the morning the results were in showing John Shepherd taking second place with a net 62 pushing John Williams (also net 62) into the third place spot on countback. These scores were only bettered by one man, Ian Wingrove, who carded a fine net 61 to take first place.
In The Captain’s Challenge the Captain, Brian Best, and Vice-Captain, Colin Chapman, took on Brian Ridley and Alec Parret. A string of fours by Chapman on the second half meant that the Challengers went two down to lose the match.
Tuesday 11th. September Whitstable & Seasalter Old Salts travelled to Westgate to compete in the Seven Club Competition. Following an excellent day’s golf Faversham Golf Club were this year’s winners with the Old Salts coming a very commendable second.
Thursday 13th. September the Old Salts held a Texas Scramble. This is always a popular form of competition and was closely fought. A very strong team comprising Captain Brian Best, John Dowle, Dave Morgan and Bernie Whitaker lived up to expectations and finished in first place.

The first competition of the month was a greensomes. Drawn pairs took part, a high and low handicap put together. The successful pair, with 41 points was Margaret Barker and Penny Kinnersley, on countback from Fran Price and Val Brown.
On the first nine, the winners, with 22 points were Stella Lakin and Jean Hudson. The back nine was won by Moira Mayhew and Marie Hood, 20 points.
Next, on the 11th was the Spring meeting. In the morning, the format was a medal competition. 33 ladies took part. The first three places all got the same net score;69; the winner emerged as Val Brown, second was Mary King, and third was Debbie Murray.
The best front nine was won by Jean Hudson, 33.5, Beryl Wingrove won the second nine, 33.5.
After a fine lunch, there was a 4 ball better ball competition over nine holes. Jean Hudson featured again, winning with her partner Sheila Wyles with 19 points between them. Beryl Wingrove had another good game with her partner Val Bayliss, achieving 17 points, to come second.
The Aggregate Cup, presented to the player with the best combined score for both the Spring and Autumn meetings was won by Debbie Murray. Debbie won the Spring meeting so her third place put her in an unassailable position.
On Sunday a posse of 8 pairs travelled to show their skills in a Mixed Greensome Jamboree at North Foreland. Unfortunately the other clubs’ skills were superior to ours ! But the pairing of Mary King and Jack Dale was successful and they won the prize for the best Whitstable pair with their 41 points.
The match against Hythe ladies on the 24th was halved. The match on the 27th against Canterbury ladies was lost, but Shirley Rosser and Holly Butler halved their match and Linda Bawden and Sheila Wyles only lost on the 18th, having halved 6 holes on the back nine.
Six intrepid ladies took on the Juniors on the 22nd and were surprised and delighted to win two matches to one. We are looking forward to retaining the trophy next year, so watch out juniors!
On Tuesday 25th there was a different type of competition; a Pinehurst. This seemed to go down well with the players, drawn pairs on this occasion. The format took a bit of getting used to, bit of different concentration needed, but all good fun, it appeared. The lucky winners were Inge Parry and Jackie Witten, 38 points, and runners up, Mel Bashford and Sue Pout, 36. Sue had taken on a seagull at one point, but luckily the seagull won and trotted off to see another day, much to her (Sue’s) relief.
There was a treat on the 29th when Westgate hosted an inaugural mixed greensomes competition. Beautiful weather met the nine matches as they set out, and the result went Whitstable’s way, all square until the last pair, Ian and Beryl Wingrove came in with a win. This is set to become a regular on the calendar, with a return match as well. All the Whitstable ladies were winners, as they were all presented with a rose from the table. Such a good time was had by all, that I can see entry for this event being filled up as soon as it is offered. There was a special treat for Doreen Dale, as she was teamed with someone who turned out to be a long lost cousin!

Golf Report for Sunday mornings
The recent September Medal provided an opportunity for Stuart Moore to finally win one of the Club’s major competitions. After being placed in a number of recent events, Stuart ended strongly on this occasion with three pars and finished with a net sixty to win on count back from Mike Calthrop and Malcolm Cane .
This year’s finals day included a terrific tussle between Ted Henderson and Ronnie Rumball to determine the “Captains Prize” winner played over thirty-six holes. Ronnie had his nose in front at the half way stage and looked in with a chance if he could manage to hold his nerve. During the afternoon Ted made his experience and class count and unforced errors from Ronnie allowed Ted to finish winner on the sixteenth, three up with two to play.
Other knockout final results included a win for the second year running by Andy Watkins in the Seasalter Cup after a closely fought match that ended on the last hole against Graham Williams. The Club Captain, John Wegner ended his knock-out competition campaign as the eventual winner of the Veteran’s Trophy against Kit Ryan. Having been behind for most of the match, John drew level on the seventeenth and with a classy three on the last managed to win the hole and the match.

Wednesday 12th September Cecil Wren September Cup Medal.
The captain’s challenge was a crushing 4&3 victory for Albert Adams and Roy Lee, Bob Ireland and Peter Shearing not really gelling on the day, congratulations Albert and Roy.
New members Ian Burton, Cliff Campbell, P.West, Stewart Brown, Jack Scott, Bob Daniels, Chris Reeves, Bill Cloke and Jonathon Kellow were welcomed.
The day was won by Stan Dobson with a net 60, second was Bob McCormick with 61 and third Terry Bills on 62.
Birdies, once again thin on the ground were won by Stan Dobson and Colin Satchell, both on the 6th.
Charity sweep was won by Roy Lee, a rollover for 2nd and Jack Scott third.
The result of the Summer Eclectic was 1st Tommy Burns 53.5, 2nd Bob Ireland 55.5 and third Dave Chalk 56.
Friday 28th September The Hamish Burton Tandoori Cup Stableford.
Fred Lynn kindly stood in for Peter Shearing- recovering from some surgery, and we managed to Beat Tony Taunton and Trevor Croxton 4&3 after a very competitive first nine.
The sad news of the death of Dave Gould was marked by a toast to his memory – we will all miss him- he was one of a kind.
At the end of October the captains of the various section will hand over to the new captains.
We Midweekers will be marking the changeover with a toast to the Old Year on Friday 26th October and again to the New Year on Wednesday the 14th November, the new captains welcome. The playing in will take place on Sunday 18th November.
The result of the competition was 1st John Rainey with 40 points, second Stuart Moore with 39 winning over Roger Bryant on countback.
Des Barker won the charity sweep, 2nd Jean Hudson and 3rd Mick Wyles.
Birdie prizes were awarded to John Shepherd, Ian Burton, Tommy Burns and Dave Morgan on the 17th.
Super Seventies

Our chirpy Super Seniors finished the 2012 season with 37 points, which is twice as many as last year in their Kent League C, coming in four points ahead of neighbours and new entrants Chestfield.
Broome Park again took the season’s spoils, edging out North Foreland whose chances Whitstable spoilt when they drew 2 – 2 at NF away last month in the final game of the season, when Foreland needed three game wins to top the League and could get only two from us.
During the year Whitstable had some notable successes, winning their first match of the season at home to Chestfield and again against defending champions Broome Park. They also triumphed against doughty Canterbury in June.
Whitstable again showed their mettle when they entertained Etchinghill in a friendly on September 25, coming in with another 2 – all draw against a team who will now be contesting the League as full members when they join for next season.
Peter Steigmann and captain Alec Parrett got a 2 and 1 win, whist Tony Taunton again bagged full points when he partnered Ron Fuller to success. It is always good to have another team to boost our League C numbers, especially as St Augustine’s did not play this year.
The League shows a home performance for Whitstable and Seasalter of seven wins and six game losses with three draws, and 11 losses away with our wins and one drawn game. Obviously it is our away performances that hold us back, but the endeavour was there this year and the enjoyment was as good as ever.
Alec would like to thank all who played and helped to bring the season to a better conclusion this time, and we all look forward to being further towards the top next year.

To be eligible to play for the Super Seniors see below:- The Super Seniors League is one of three run under the auspices of the Society of Kent Golf Veterans. Age requirement is to be aged 70 or over and to play off a 21 handicap or better. Whitstable are in League C, comprising for this season of Broome Park, Canterbury, North Foreland and, Chestfield (a new entrant this year after St Augustine’s dropped out at the end of last season) and ourselves. There is and end-of-season play-off with group A and B usually around mid-September. But no worries, we never aspire to such grandiose exposure Dress for all games is informal afterwards, with a bite and a coffee normally a fiver before tee-off, usually at 1pm. Team requirement is now eight players with notices posted on the Kent Vets notice board in good time for the next match. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.
